Jen Lansky, MHC-LP

During my schooling at State University of New York at New Paltz, I provided one on one counseling to college students in the campus Psychological Counseling Center and also worked with individuals, couples, families and groups at the Oncology Support Program affiliated with HealthAlliance Hospital in Kingston. At the OSP, I worked with clients who were dealing with their own or a loved one’s cancer, some as they underwent treatment and others years after the experience, from the distance at which it felt safe to emotionally process. After taking time out to start a family, I am returning to my chosen vocation of Mental Health Counselor at the Therapy Barn in Rhinebeck, where I will work under Lo Torres' supervision.
Lo and I went to graduate school together and formed a bond as the more mature and traveled students of our cohort. Though we have different therapeutic outlooks and theoretical perspectives, we share a deep respect for our work and for one another and share an abiding belief in the transformative power of the therapist/client relationship.
I come from the Existential Humanistic school. I believe we all have the same basic needs; to love, to be loved, and to feel that we have worth. When these needs are not fulfilled, anxiety and depression fill the void. The purpose of therapy is to figure out how to get our needs fulfilled, which we do by looking within, and by learning how to ask for what we need from those with whom we are in relationship. Our goals in therapy are to understand where we've come from, to clarify how our past has influenced our present, and to gain the tools we need to navigate a clear path toward becoming the person we want to be.
Kierkegaard said, "There is nothing with which every man is so afraid as getting to know how enormously much he is capable of doing and becoming,” and I believe that there is nothing quite as powerful as confronting one's own potential.
As your therapist, I'll act as a guide and sherpa through the therapeutic process, bringing my genuine self to work to provide an environment in which you can feel safe as you explore parts of your self and your past which may make you uncomfortable. With patience, empathy and humor, I will work with you and remind you that you have the power to decide how you address crises and who you are in the face of your insecurities. Together, let’s examine your inner narrative and figure out how to make it a more constructive conversation.
I am currently providing Teletherapy only for the foreseeable future.
